Each part of the home needs special attention for any new home to qualify for Energy Star certification. How does each and every home we build reach these standards? Some variables that inspectors look for include the following:
Why would the government or homeowners care about Energy Star certification? More new homes built for longevity and efficiency can ease the strain on the grid and available resources. And as an added bonus, this means money saved and a better home design for homeowners.
So Energy Star homes perform better, but how much better are they? Well, our homes are routinely verified to use 15 – 30% less energy than traditional new homes. Again, this means more money in your wallet because it prevents unnecessary power use. Not to mention studies show that energy-efficient homes also have better resale value.
In Texas and New Mexico, home efficiency is measured using the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index. The HERS Index is a national system that uses strict metrics and testing to evaluate homes. The index is on a scale of 0 to 150, with 0 representing perfect efficiency and 150 meaning a maximally inefficient home. While the average new home may have a score of around 70 or 80, our tract, semi-custom, and custom homes routinely receive scores below 40.
